Learn to Read of St. Johns County, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose volunteers provide
free literacy skills assessment and instruction in St. Johns and Putnam Counties to individuals 16
years of age and older. In addition to one-on-one literacy tutoring, Learn to Read has recently
expanded its services throughout the counties to help people learn English as a second language
(ESOL) through personal tutoring and group conversation courses.
Learn to Read believes literacy skills are vital for people to find work and to participate in their
community. We tutor our students to pass the GED, the Adult Basic Education Test (TABE), and to
achieve advancement in the workplace. Learn to Read depend on your support to purchase the
books and other necessary teaching materials, as well as maintain the facility in which we operate.
Your support is paramount to helping decrease barriers to employment and higher education that
prevent our students from moving forward.
Their Mission Statement: “Learn to Read of St. Johns County, Inc. offers donors, volunteers and
advocates the organization they require to support our community’s adult learners with literacy
tutoring, thereby removing barriers to employment, higher education, economic mobility and health
literacy.”

In September, 2022, Dee was a featured panelist at the St. Augustine Film Society’s monthly meeting which featured a film from their
eco-series, “Endangered Mermaids”, followed by a lively discussion about Manatees. This event, held at the St. Augustine Yacht Club,
was well attended by many who were concerned about Florida’s Manatees. Other panelists were a Marine Mammal Research Biologist
with the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission (“FWC”), Nadia Gordon, and the Curator of Mammals at the Jacksonville Zoo and
Gardens, Craig Miller.
The 2007 film, “Endangered Mermaids” featured subject—manatees—discussed the difficult times they were having, especially getting
food in the Indian River Lagoon. They also discussed the dangers presented by boats not observing posted speed limits in posted
manatee zones.
